School of Leadership - Afghanistan (SOLA)

We had the great fortune of having with us on campus intelligent women from School of Leadership Afghanistan (SOLA), the only boarding school for girls in Afghanistan. Although their visit here was packed with various activities, some of the members of our team managed to communicate with them and made some time to hold a session with them. We gave a presentation, first explaining where we come from and why we chose to be a part of this team. Although we knew the details regarding the latter beforehand, I feel we had never articulated it to an audience, and it was very powerful to explain our passions and how the group dynamics of our team work. It was a good experience to clearly talk about the intricacies of the FIRST Tech Challenge this year and to describe our journey, the various improvements in the design as we saw things didn’t work, fund-raising and working with people all over the world to make it possible for us to make this robot, getting together a team and dividing the multiple tasks that come with participation. There was quite a fascination with the CAD design that was also shown. Eventually we not only demonstrated the working of the robot, simultaneously providing the information and mathematics behind it, but also had some of the girls and teachers from SOLA try controlling the robot. It was a meaningful session where I feel we all learned something new.
